Party photography and capturing people in celebration mode is my forte.
When I was growing up, my father was famed for his annual birthday and Christmas parties. They were fancy-dress parties. People rose to the occasion coming in the most amazing fancy dress costumes.
Back in those days, my dad was a keen photographer and would take a few shots himself. I don’t think professional party photographers even existed.
I love looking back through our family albums at those old photos. Those parties hold such wonderful memories.
Some years later, when he turned 65, my father celebrated in style by throwing a fabulous birthday party in London for all his friends and family. The party was given an ‘opera’ theme, and friends were invited to ‘A Night At The Opera’.
Last week, my step-mother turned 70. She explained in her opening birthday speech, how she had decided last year, that if she survived her major heart operation, she would celebrate in style. And that’s exactly what she did. Her party invitation was called ‘Another Night at the Opera’.
Nearly all veterans, everyone embraced the spirit of the occasion and took the opportunity to dress-up or glam-up. I treated myself to a new party frock for the occasion.
Here are a few shots I took, although admittedly, I wasn’t really in professional party photography mode, as I was way too busy enjoying myself, drinking, chatting and catching up with family friends.

I do admire my Step-mother. She’s a pretty remarkable woman. She has so much energy and pizzazz. Her mother lived to 97, and my dad’s mother is now 102. So with those genetics, I’m sure the pair of them will be throwing many more parties to come. And if there’s one thing to be said for both my parents, it’s that they really do know how to throw a jolly-good party!
