Last week I photographed a 50th birthday party in Broxbourne. I’ve known Mike, the birthday boy, for several years now, a much valued client from my event planning days. So I was really thrilled when Mike hired my social event photography services. Mike also liked and selected the storybook albums that I produce to make his memories more precious.
The event, which was fancy dress consisted of three party themes, Hollywood, 70s Disco and Spanish Flamenco. Props and decorations adorned the hall and walls beautifully and really added to the party atmosphere. Decorations and props always make social event photography more exciting and represent the party feeling.
I set up in the main corridor, which was decorated as a VIP, red carpet event and placed lighting in front of a backdrop. When guests arrived, they had their portrait photographed against the backdrop, which proved entertaining for both me and the guests. The VIP theme was completed with a guest list and a just for fun “if you aren’t on the list, you’re not coming in” bouncer experience. Luckily, everyone was on the list.
The guests started to arrive at 4.30pm and everyone made an amazing effort with their costumes, with many opting for the70s theme. Mike decided to celebrate his 50th as an aristocrat, complete with pocket watch, monocle and top hat. Think Abraham Lincoln meets Brunel. He looked super sophisticated and definitely stood out, which you should do on your special event!
Once all the guests had arrived, they were ushered through to the main room by an announcer dressed as Al Capone. The room was pretty dark with just a few ceiling spotlights. Low lighting is generally not a problem for a Canon 5D Mark II but nonetheless I ensured that I arrived early so I could perfect all of the settings required to produce fantastic photography.
Preparation is vital, especially for social events. Full preparation means that I am fully relaxed and ready for the event ahead. Being relaxed creates relaxed social event photography, which means high quality results. Being prepared also means that I can photograph the event with complete consistency and without disruption to the actual event. Preparation also ensures that problems are minimised and even eradicated. When hiring me for social event photography, I not only photograph, but I also ensure that I capture and provide the best quality images. Pre and post photography are part and parcel of the final results.
Throughout the night, there were multiple activities, which kept the guests thoroughly entertained and made for a fantastic night. They also made for excellent photography, which really portrayed the fun and vibrancy of the overall event. The fun filled activities included salsa dancing, a Mariachi band and top class DJs.
Everyone had a great time, including myself and I captured lots of great moments. Everyone was in the party spirit and was requesting their photo taken. I love it when people interact with me, and the camera, but I also enjoy blending into the background and capturing fantastic reportage social event photography.
