Working with children

Posted by Kim Rix on February 28, 2017

I do love working with children. I have photographed a lot of children over the last seven years and I personally like to think that I do it rather well.

One of the things I have learned with children’s photography is how to make children feel chilled and at ease.

Every age is distinct and every infant is distinct. Some will come bursting in looking forward to seeing you are geared up for anything. Others might be slightly more shy and retiring and need some coaxing.

When working with children I will meet them at their level, chatting with them about what they like, what they have been doing and general getting them comfortable.

If it means playing about and acting the idiot I can do that. If it means taking everything slightly slower and quieter then I can do that too.

Parents, for the first part of the session I will normally be photographing you and your children together. This helps them feel comfortable with me and my camera. They still have their Mum or Dad for moral support.

Pretty soon they will be happy and chilled and up for having their own portrait taken. By now, your child will be loving the attention.

I feel like I am in my element when I am working with children. I know my way works because so many children remember me when we get together again for the next photoshoot.
